Mcgregor at a glance
McGregor is a charming and quaint village situated at the base of the Riviersonderend Mountains in the Western Cape, around 150 odd kilometres from the Mother City of Cape Town and about 20 kilometres from neighbouring Robertson.
McGregor has been on the map since it was established back in the mid 1800’s when it was first known as “Lady Grey” (there were 2 Lady Grey’s in SA at that time!) before it was renamed in honor of a local Minister - Andrew McGregor.
McGregor houses are well known for providing pristine examples of traditional old thatch cottages with mini orchards and gardens, all immaculately kept from the mid 1800’s.
Outdoor Activities in and around McGregor
McGregor has also been building a name as a result of its access to good hiking trails and nature reserves. The Krans Nature reserve which is on McGregor’s doorstep is under development and the likes of the Vrolikheid Reserve is a few kilometres away.
Well-known local trails in the area include the Kleinberg Trail which starts in the village, the Kingsrivier Kloof Trail, the Heron Trail, the Boesmanskloof Trail, the Genadendal Trail and the Rooikat Trail.
McGregor’s very “remoteness” forms a large part of its appeal as you really get the sensation of being away from it all when you visit – a major plus for its many Cape Town guests!
