Previously a sleepy holiday town, Hermanus is one of several coastal resorts in SA that has seen exceptional growth over the past two years and welcomed many new permanent residents attracted by the luxury lifestyle that it offers.
 
“In particular,” says Dean Meijer, owner of the Chas Everitt Whale Coast franchise, “there has been an influx of buyers from Gauteng and other upcountry provinces as well as buyers from overseas who have all decided to make Hermanus their home.

“Many have told us that they are eager to get away from the hustle and bustle of big cities and come here for the village atmosphere. Even though Hermanus is not really a small town anymore, it still has a strong community spirit, as well as an excellent climate and a laid-back, luxury coastal lifestyle.”

He says that about half of the recent buyers in the town have been between the ages of 50 and 64 and planning their retirement, but that an increasing percentage are well-to-do working couples with growing families.

“And the growing popularity of Hermanus has put upward pressure on prices, which have risen by up to 15% over the past two years. The average price of homes in the upmarket suburbs of Eastcliff, Fernkloof, Hermanus Heights, Kwaaiwater and Northcliff is now R3m.”

Meijer notes, too, that there is a waiting list for homes in the local luxury lifestyle estates of Hemel en Aarde and Fernkloof Golf Estate, where many homes have now broken through the R10m price threshold.
