Riebeek Valley at a glance

The Riebeek Valley incorporates the towns of Riebeek West, Riebeek Kasteel, Riebeeksrivier and Hermon. Nestling on the slopes of its own mountain, the dramatic Kasteelberg, the surrounds are wheat lands, vineyards and olive groves, creating a distinctive touch of the Mediterranean in Africa.

Both Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West are at the foot of the Kasteelberg, only 5 km from each other in the Swartland district, Western Cape,South Africa. Only an hour from Cape Town, you will love the rural atmosphere of these quaint villages.

History

The first Europeans that visited the valley, were an exploring party under leadership of corporal Cruythoff. They were sent by Jan van Riebeek, after which the mountain, Kasteelberg, and the two towns, Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West were named.

Riebeek West is also known as the birthplace of two ministers of the Union of South Africa, namely Jan Smuts and D.F. Malan. D.F. Malan was born in 1874 on the well-known farm, Allesverloren. This farm is still owned by the Malan family and is famous for its port and red wine.
