Kosmos at a glance

The village of Kosmos in Hartbeespoort (Northwest Province) is snuggled up against the Northern shores of the Hartbeespoort Dam, in between the Magaliesberg Mountain range and it lies on the south, steep side of the monocline.

Kosmos offers some of the most stunning property for sale in Hartbeespoort. At its north eastern end the mighty Crocodile River passes through the Hartbeespoort Dam, at this point the cliffs are too steep to allow buildings or a road.

The history of the village starts with the first Kosmos houses being built in the 1920s shortly after the Dam was built back in the early 1900’s. It would seem that the name “Kosmos” has its roots in the Kosmos flower (also known as the Mexican Aster) which grows wild in great drifts and are most commonly found alongside the roads leading from the Highveld towards the North West Province.

More Kosmos property development followed over the years, and the popularity of houses in Kosmos increased, particularly amongst the Johannesburg and Pretoria property buyers looking for weekend “breakaway” homes.

With the properties in Kosmos having only a single access road this has also contributed to the Kosmos area having developed a strong sense of community. On the short road leading to Kosmos village, several resort style residential Hartbeespoort estates have been developed.

One of these is the stylish and exclusive Caribbean Beach Estate which boasts a rather challenging nine hole golf course beautifully positioned right on the shores of the Hartbeespoort  dam. The Caribbean Beach Estate has some 350 full title houses and sectional title properties, with a trendy restaurant, tennis courts, squash courts and boating marina.

Residential Lifestyle Estates in Hartbeespoort have multiplied over the last decade as the area draws Gauteng property buyers – both holiday home and permanent residents. Hartbeespoort estates like Pecanwood Golf Estate,Westlake, Caribbean Beach Club, The Islands, Eagles Landing, Xanadu Eco Park, The Coves and L’bali Village have proved to be exceptionally popular choices.

There are also a number of places of interest around the Hartbeespoort area including as the Snake Park, elephant  sanctuary, the Hartbeespoort aerial cable car, Bush Babies Monkey sanctuary, cheetah sanctuary, Chameleon Village and hot air balloon rides.
