Hurlyvale at a glance
History
Hurlyvale was laid out originally on the site of a dairy farm owned by the Hurly family. Part of the original Rietfontein farm which was established in the mid 1800's is now Harwood's Farm, the farmhouse of which has been declared a national monument.
Present day Hurlyvale houses were built starting in about 1948 as economic housing for returning ex - servicemen after World War Two. Many Hurlyvale homes were built by the then well-known firm of Gough - Cooper; two streets today bearing their names.
Some of the early Hurlyvale residents were nuns at the then Edenvale Convent, (now known as Holy Rosary School). The street names in Hurlyvale are named after Saints - as most of the Hurly family's children were due to their being devoted Catholics.
Hurlyvale Property
Hurlyvale property is in high demand due to the fact that many Edenvale home buyers want to purchase real estate in the area zoned for the Primary School.
Hurlyvale housing prices have weathered the storm of the property slump over the past few years very well.
House prices declined sharply in 2008 (as did much of Edenvale's property) but then recovered to a large extent over the following couple of years, due to the demand created by the presence of the Hurlyvale Primary School.
Today Hurlyvale properties can be purchased for anything between the R800 thousands for a complete fixer-upper property, right through to a top end price of close to R2 million for a totally refurbished and modernized home.
Security, as always is at a premium, with considerably higher prices being paid for properties in the boomed areas, even though, according to the SAPS, the Hurlyvale area enjoys a lower crime rate than many other parts of the Edenvale area.

Hurlyvale Today
Modern day Hurlyvale is a pleasant middle class suburb where most of the older houses have been extensively added to and renovated.
Hurlyvale today has been divided into three secure boomed areas, each with its' own management committee adding to its appeal with property purchasers.
Modern day Hurlyvale is a flourishing, friendly community and is conveniently situated close to the Edenvale CBD as well as to the big Germiston hypermarkets just across the R24 Highway.
Hurlyvale is also easily in reach of the huge Greenstone shopping area. Hurlyvale is also only a 10 minute drive from OR Tambo airport and the Emperors Casino complex with its international class hotels.
Suburb Amenities
Hurlyvale has several pleasant parks which are maintained by the Town Council in conjunction with the residents committees.
It's a common sight to see Hurlyvale residents in the early evening playing in the parks or walking their dogs.
