Beware of fires as power outages continue

While South Africa has enjoyed an extended period without official loadshedding, the reality is that many areas are still experiencing unexpected electricity outages when ageing infrastructure fails, as well as planned “no power” days to allow municipalities to carry out essential repairs and maintenance.

As a result, households still need to remain vigilant and prepared for sudden interruptions and power surges that can cause costly damage to appliances and other electrical equipment. And they also need to remain aware of the fire risks created when the power goes out and they have to resort to using candles, fireplaces and gas cookers.

To stay safe, they should ensure that:

*All family members understand the risks associated with open flames;

*Burning candles are never left unattended, and are always kept away from flammable materials like curtains in case they are accidentally knocked over;

*Fires are always extinguished before going to bed; and that

*Any gas cylinders used for cooking or heating are in good working condition, and that spare cylinders are safely stored outdoors.

Before using a fireplace in winter, homeowners also need to check that the chimney and flue are clean and operating properly. And they should clear a fireproof area in front of the grate to prevent falling sparks or logs from causing a housefire.

 It is also important to remember that electrical faults remain one of the leading causes of house fires. Regularly inspecting wiring and ensuring that appliance cords are in good condition can significantly reduce this risk. Any frayed cords should be replaced immediately and plug points should never be overloaded.

And finally, homeowners should establish a clear emergency plan and ensure that all household members know what to do in the event of a fire or any other disaster. This is one of the best ways to prevent loss of life and property but is all too often overlooked.
