Built in 1924, Calitzdorp Station was a vibrant addition to the town, transporting fruit and Ostrich feathers across the country and ultimately to Europe. It was a place of joyous greetings and fond farewells, of chance encounters and longed for journeys.
Today it is a destination in itself. The station continues to attract those with a spirit of adventure.
This is a large vibrant property with lots of scope for further development. The large versatile goods shed, which includes a character bar is currently used for functions and festivals, of which Calitzdorp has more than its fair share. With its nostalgic charm, wooden sprung floors and high ceilings it has become a very popular wedding venue.
Lying in the shadow of the imposing red sandstone cliff, the old ticket officer serves as three self-catering units, with their period features, original fireplaces and wooden floors, they are very popular with visitors to the town. A camping area with seven under shade “glamping tents” , caravan/camping sites with power and water laid on, newly renovated shared ablutions and a fully equipped communal kitchen make up the rest of the available accommodation. For those balmy summer days, a large pool is available to all residents.
Down a private road, lies the original railway house, with 3 bedrooms, an open plan kitchen and living area and a peaceful front stoep.
The property has a bore hole, and also receives Lei water from the Calitzdorp water scheme, this water is stored in tanks, and there is also the dam on the property. This water is used to irrigate the gardens and land. Currently, approximately 30 mature olive trees are bearing fruit, however there is land and water available to increase the farming potential.
Calitzdorp is famous for its port style wines, scenic routes and its many species of fynbos and succulents.
