Moorreesburg is a tranquil and friendly town about 100 kilometres away from Cape Town, and, if you believe the property agents, fast on its way to becoming a commuter town, although you would have to be a fan of peace and quiet for it to be an option.
The impression of a ‘one-horse town’ at first glance is largely deceptive, and those driving through without stopping are missing out on a number of goings-on. Not only is Morreesburg the heart of a strong farming community but it also has one of only three wheat museum’s in the world.
This area is known as the “Breadbasket” of South Africa. Wheat was first grown here in the 1700’s. The Wheat Industry Museum, one of only three of it’s kind in the world is well worth a visit. Housed in the old Dutch Reformed Mission Church building, it depicts the history of wheat from early Egyptian times to the modern day.
The original road from Morreesburg, en route to Piketberg, crosses the Berg River with the aid of a steel girder bridge - originally destined for Australia. A vessel carrying the bridge stopped in Table Bay in 1850 for repairs that entailed removing the bridge from its deck. The bridge was forever abandoned as the result of a battle to get her back on board, and today it rests on the only river wide enough for it to span.
Every year during September the town comes alive when the popular Agricultural Swartland Show takes place. This event is very popular and visited by crowds of people.
For the more energetic we offer 4x4 and cycling-trials, hiking, clay-pigeon, fishing, watersports and camping on the banks of the Bergriver and boat trips on the Misverstanddam, not far away off the N7.
The local high school has opened an art gallery, displaying over seventy local and recognised artists who form part of the local art route - fast becoming popular.
Our outstanding golf course attracts many golf lovers who enjoy the 9-hole course and our Swartland hospitality.
Moorreesburg offers excellent accomodation, guest farms, restaurants and conference venues, shops, primary and secondary schools with hostel accomodation. Moorreesburg and its surrounding area is the ideal breakaway as a tourist destination. The fresh air and tranquil atmosphere of the countryside is a must for body and soul.
Koringberg, a peacefull village, is only 6km off the N7, halfway between Moorreesburg and Piketberg.
This village has become very popular with paragliders, horse-riders and mountain- bikers. Here you experience peace, far from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Neulfonteinkop and Misverstand Dam aren’t destinations in a local novel, although the charm of their names does lend a certain nostalgia and inclination to visit these local attractions.
Neulfonteinkop is in fact a hill just outside town upon which sits an old ship’s cannon - used in days gone by to alert farmers to newly docked ships in Cape Town’s harbour so that they could rush off with their produce. There is a welcome hike on the hill and the Misverstand Dam is very popular for water sports with locals and visitors alike.
