Some useful information regarding Gauteng.
Gauteng Property and Area Information
The Gauteng property market is the strongest in South Africa which isn’t surprising with Gauteng also being the most urbanized province in South Africa with a population exceeding the 8 million mark and is known as Africa’s central business point.
As economic growth continues, Gauteng continues to grow with continued investment in the range of Gauteng property for sale in Johannesburg, Midrand, Pretoria and Sandton properties leading the list of popular Gauteng real estate buys.
The Gauteng province was originally formed from part of the old Transvaal province after South Africa's first free elections on 27 April 1994. Gauteng was named in December 2004 and formerly known as the PWV (Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vereeniging) area. With less than 2% of the land area, Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa and is situated in the heart of the Highveld. The name “Gauteng” is derived from Sesotho, meaning "Place of Gold".
The Gauteng area is commonly broken down into the following regions:
East Rand | Gauteng Property
The East Rand region of Gauteng encompasses Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Edenvale, Germiston, Brakpan, Nigel, Springs and their surrounding areas. Also included in this region are Kempton Park and the Johannesburg International Airport.
All of the aforementioned towns, each of which used to be a separate municipality, have been incorporated into the new Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The whole area has grown and developed as a direct result of the discovery of gold in the area, though Springs was founded after the discovery of coal. The East Rand is now an extremely important region in terms of the economics of Gauteng property market.
Many foreigners unknowingly begin their South African experience in the East Rand, as their first stop will be at OR Tambo airport (ORT), the busiest airport in Africa handling more than 14 million passengers a year and employing some 18000 people. ORT has recently completed a three-year rebuilding program.
ORT is a 20-minute drive from the eastern suburbs of Johannesburg and a 45-minute trip from Sandton and Rosebank, where a wide selection of accommodation and mainstream hotels are found. Take care when travelling in Gauteng - peak traffic times are challenging as the highways around Johannesburg can become very congested.
The well-priced variety of East Rand property makes it a popular area for a wide range of Gauteng property purchasers. Our East Rand Property offering includes homes in Bedfordview, Boksburg, Benoni, Brakpan, Edenvale, Kempton Park, Nigel and Springs.
West Rand | Gauteng Property
The West Rand region of the Gauteng property market encompasses the towns Carltonville, Krugersdorp, Westonaria, Randfontein, Soweto, Western Gauteng, the Magaliesburg and all the surrounding areas.
All of the aforementioned towns, each of which used to be a separate municipality, have been incorporated into the new West Rand District Municipality.
A greater part of the West Rand region is rural and includes some of Gauteng's most beautiful scenery. To the West of the region are the Magaliesberg and Witwatersberg mountains and the valleys of the Skeerpoort and Crocodile rivers. In this area are the archaeological finds in the Sterkfontein Valley, now known to be the cradle of mankind.
The Magaliesberg range has seen the establishment of numerous hotels, guest houses and resorts along its entire length. In the Eastern part of the range is to be found the Hartbeespoort Dam, a popular escape for the weekend and home to many different watersports.
West Rand Property ranges tremendously in both price and variety due to the huge geographical variances, with a mix of areas around commercial centres to rural settings. Our West Rand Properties for sale include homes in Mogale City Randburg, Randfontein, Ruimsig and the Featherbrooke Estate.

It is actually the most isolated, least integrated area of Johannesburg, with its east, west, and southern boundaries also forming Johannesburg proper's boundaries in the area. It is diagonally traversed by the N1, with the N12 running along its northern border.
Alberton is a homely town with a significant history. It was founded in 1804 and is vibrant and ever growing. Only twenty minutes’ drive from JHB International Airport, as well as the University of JHB it’s a popular choice with prospective purchaser of property in Gauteng.,
Part of the popularity of houses in Alberton is access as it is surrounded by three highways - the R59, N3 & N12 which makes it very accessible and yet it is so serenely separate from the frantic feel of the city.
