Melkbosstrand (English: "Milk bush beach"), named after the
species of Euphorbiaceae bushes which grow on the dunes and give off a milky
latex like substance, it is commonly referred to simply as Melkbos. The town
and its 7km stretch of white sand beach is situated on the Atlantic coast with
the Blouberg mountain to the east. It is notable for being one of the landing
points for the South Africa-Far East and South Atlantic/West Africa submarine
cable systems.

Melkbosstrand was developed in 1924 and consisted of the Damhuis - a lovely Cape Dutch homestead which is a heritage site - a few holiday houses, the Post Office and the local café. The historical Battle of Blaauwberg was fought close to where Melkbos village has developed.

The Melkbosstrand flora consists of two major veld types: Weast Coast Strandveld and Dune Veld. This unique fynbos can be seen flourishing in the spring when the village and its surrounds are carpeted with a large variety of colourful wild flowers.
.Melkbos has a very safe slipway for boat launching. Melkbos is also the base of the NSRI Station 18 which operates from Big Bay at Blouberg Strand, northwards to Yzerfontain and from the shoreline to a range of 10 Nautical Miles from the coast.
Melkbos receives its rain from April to October with an average rainfall of 375mm per annum. During winter daytime temperature rarely drops below 10degreesC.
Suburbs
Melkbos proper. This is the heart of Melkbosstrand. Shops, doctors , churches, restaurants are mostly situated here. The Birkenhead Shopping Centre with Pick and Pay and Clicks as anchor tenants is where most of the businesses is situated. The most popular restaurants is Orca Café , Eastern Fusion and Silver Bay Spur.
Van Riebeekstrand.
Duynefontein. This suburb was established when Koeberg Power Station was built.
