History
Hurlyvale was laid out originally on the site of a dairy farm owned by the Hurly family. Part of the original Rietfontein farm which was established in the mid 1800’s is now Harwood’s Farm, the farmhouse of which has been declared a national monument.
Present day Hurlyvale houses were built starting in about 1948 as economic housing for returning ex – servicemen after World War Two. Many Hurlyvale homes were built by the then well-known firm of Gough – Cooper; two streets today bearing their names.
Some of the early Hurlyvale residents were nuns at the then Edenvale Convent, (now known as Holy Rosary School). Hence, many of the Hurlyvale streets are named after Saints.

Hurlyvale property is in high demand due to the fact that many Edenvale home buyers want to purchase real estate in the area zoned for the Primary School.
Hurlyvalehousing prices have weathered the storm of the property slump over the past few years very well.
House prices declined sharply in 2008 (as did much of Edenvale’s property) but then recovered to a large extent over the following couple of years, due to the demand created by the presence of the HurlyvalePrimary School.
Today Hurlyvaleproperties can be purchased for anything between the R700 thousands for a complete fixer–upperproperty, right through to a top end price of close to R1,8 million for a totally refurbished and modernisedhome.
Security, as always is at a premium, with considerably higher prices being paid for properties in the boomed areas, even though, according to the SAPS, the Hurlyvale area enjoys a lower crime rate than many other parts of the Edenvale area.
