FROM BERRY EVERITT

And so we come to the end of another year, grateful that the property market is now in much better shape than it was 12 months ago and full of good expectations for the next 12. Interest rates are at a 30-year low and the economists are predicting that home price growth, which has slowed somewhat in recent months, will pick up again towards the middle of 2011.

There is good news, too, on the macro-economic front. Although GDP growth only reached 2,6% in the third quarter, we need to remember that this is three times higher than it was a year ago - and way, way off the -7% low experienced in the second quarter of 2009. We've come a very long way in a relatively short time and are poised to do even better as household debt keeps on shrinking and consumers are able to start spending again.

More positive news is that the just-released FNB / BER building confidence index has increased from 29 three months ago to 38 - the highest level in two years. This is mostly due to increased confidence among service providers at the front end of the building pipeline, such as architects and quantity surveyors, but it suggests a broader recovery in the actual construction industry from the second half of next year. And since this industry is one of the biggest employers in SA, that will translate into a real benefit for real estate.

Speaking of job creation, we are very encouraged by the latest developments on that front (see below) but I think that probably the most heartening statistics I have read in weeks are the following, entirely in the spirit with which we at Chas Everitt International like to celebrate at the end of the year.

They come from a recent report by Barclays Wealth on a survey it conducted to gauge global philanthropy - and they reveal that South Africans are the second most generous nation in the world (after the US) when it comes to giving money to the poor, and the fourth most generous with volunteering their time for worthy causes (after Ireland, India and the US).

Now that's something to be really proud of, and it is in that vein that we wish all our readers a happy, healthy and generous holiday season.
