FROM BERRY EVERITT

SA is a winning nation. Back in the Eighties when our famous futurist Clem Sunter started holding seminars and outlining the high road and low road scenarios for SA, few could have imagined the scenes we have all witnessed over the past few weeks - of ardent Blue Bulls supporters partying in Soweto, of beautiful dancers of every race participating side-by-side in the magnificent Soccer World Cup opening ceremony, and of passionate Bafana Bafana fans hugging the equally weirdly-dressed supporters of competing teams.

But it has all been real, and the dream has come true. Despite losing its footing and slipping back many times over the past 16 years, SA has now reached the high road. It has used its skills and resources and technology to deliver a truly world-class experience for the hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors who came to see the soccer. But more than that, what has really impressed the tourists is the friendliness, warmth and generosity of ordinary South Africans in all walks of life.

And we all know already that this is the real key to the success of this country - patriotism that is not expressed as some exclusive nationalism, but as an inclusive pride in and loyalty to each other. It is our own special magic, an elixir of extraordinary power that has already enabled us to do many great things together.

Now we just need to learn how to keep that energy flowing so we can drink from it every day, and not just when we want to put our best foot forward for guests. We must continue to celebrate being on the high road, on the winning path - even when no-one else is watching.
