FROM
BERRY EVERITT
So there is France, one of the richest and safest
countries in the world - and are its people happy? Definitely not,
going by the fact that the country is Europe's biggest consumer
of anti-depressants.
In fact, according to a just-released international
Gallup poll, they are the most pessimistic people in the world,
with 61% believing 2011 will bring them economic woe, compared to
an average of 28% who think this in the 53 countries surveyed.
In Brazil, India and China, on the other hand,
49% of people believe 2011 will be economically prosperous, and
in Vietnam, the most optimistic country, 70% are confident of a
good year financially. And while Gallup did not give figures for
SA, we are apparently also relatively optimistic despite job insecurities.
According to a December survey by Deloittes, 45% of South Africans
believe that the economy will improve in 2011.
Indeed, our country appears to be gaining increasing
renown for our positive, "can-do" attitude, and nowhere
was this hopeful outlook more evident this past week than on the
shining faces of the 2010 matriculants, who had just pulled off
our second World Cup miracle by doing so well.
They made me feel so proud of living here, and
their determination to find opportunities rather than give in to
obstacles has really reinforced my own confidence that together
South Africans will bring about more economic recovery this year
- and that we will see a steady improvement in the property market.
Indeed, as 2010 came to a close we were already
seeing an increase in sales that exceeded expectations. And there
are promising signs as we begin 2011 that the business start to
the year could be earlier and more active than we have seen for
a number of years. So it is with great optimism that I am reviving
that old greeting, and wishing everyone not only a happy New Year
but a prosperous one as well.

Top
questions for tenants to ask |

The actions of the Human Settlements Ministry do of course
have a profound effect on the whole residential property market
in SA, so it is always interesting to hear what it has on
the agenda...

|
Just as there are "problem" tenants, there are
also "problem" landlords - and even more often,
"problem" properties. Ask any tenant and they'll
tell you at least one horror story about a place they wish
they'd never seen...

your estate more neighbourly |

It's awful to be on bad terms with your neighbours - and
even worse if they are members of the same Home Owners' Association
as you, and you are expected to work together to run your
gated community...
