Dare to go bare in Plett

For the next few days, the residents of Plettenberg Bay will be celebrating the footloose and fancy-free lifestyle of their Garden Route holiday town at the second annual Barefoot Festival.

The festival, organised by the Plettenberg Bay Tourism Association, has gained some muscle since last year through corporate sponsorship and will feature live shows and demonstrations, arts and crafts and gastronomic delights as well as fun beach activities.

The festival runs until 2 October, with the last event being the “Barefoot Ball” for 5000. This will be held on the main beach, and organisers are erecting a giant marquee to make sure rain won’t dampen revellers’ spirits. Tuxedos are optional for this event but footwear of any description will be frowned upon.

The Chas Everitt International franchise in Plett has sponsored the last day of the festival, and owner John Fuller says all tickets for the ball were sold out weeks in advance.

“But, as a main sponsor, we also wanted to make sure the festival had a social awareness component,” he says. “So, in keeping with the theme, we have placed shoe collection boxes at various large retail outlets, schools and at our offices and are appealing to our community to donate footwear that will then be distributed to charity organisations.”

The Chas Everitt International sales team will be out in force during the whole festival at the company’s hospitality tent. “And we are really looking forward to just mingling with the public and enjoying ourselves. After all, the focus of this festival is on kicking back and having a good time.

“But, just in case visitors become so enamoured with the wonderful Plett lifestyle that they can’t wait to live here, we will have property portfolios on hand for them to inspect!”
