Milling around in Agter-Paarl

29 May 2006

The quaint country village of Windmeul, just outside Paarl in the Western Cape Boland, is getting a facelift with the development of a luxury security village.

The exclusive development, Waterpoel de Windmeul, consists of 11 large stands ranging from 500 to 8000sqm, but only four are still available, says Dries Basson of the local Chas Everitt International agency, which holds the sole marketing mandate. Prices for the remaining stands range between about R1,2-million and R1,5-million.

Basson says the exclusive development is aimed at lifestyle buyers and will offer 24 hour security. "The village was named after a wind-powered grain mill that was established in the late 19th century to grind the wheat of farmers in the area.

"Most of the early landowners were from German and Dutch extraction and the development will reflect the heritage of the area. Stellenbosch architect Chris de Hart is designing the homes in the traditional Boland country style so reed, rock and indigenous timber will feature strongly."

The original mill fell into disuse and was later partially demolished. However, developer Chianti Civil Construction plans to rebuild the windmill as a unique landmark. A second development is in the planning stages and municipal approval is awaited to build small shops along the road to create
a sense of self-sufficiency for residents.

Basson says the original farm on which the windmill was erected and aptly also called Windmill, is currently on the market. The 57ha wine and fruit farm offers magnificent views of Table Mountain and the Drakenstein range.

"The location is ideal for the development of a wine estate and the farm boasts high-potential red soils. The price of R13,75-millionincludes a farm house and fully equipped packing shed," Basson says.
