Rustenburg is situated in the north eastern part of SA’s North West Province. The city is located to the south of Sun City, to the west of Hartbeespoort and Brits, to the east of Mafikeng and Zeerust and to the north of the likes of Ventersdorp. Found also at the foot of the famous Magaliesberg Mountain Range.

What is the Rustenburg property market made up of?
The area is unsurprisingly dominated by freehold properties which make up around 69% of the total composition according to national property sales reports. The rest of the area is made up of sectional title and estates, which account for about 27% and 5% respectively. A reasonable number of well priced vacant stands are also available. Area trends suggest a general increase in freehold and sectional scheme Rustenburg property prices over the past 10 years, with property prices appearing to level over the past 3 to 4 years.

What do Rustenburg properties sell for?
The Rustenburg property market is quite active with nearly 1400 confirmed sales over the recent 12 month period as per Lightstone reports. These comprise of nearly 100 residential estate sales, 456 sectional scheme sales and 829 freehold or full-title Rustenburg property sales. It terms of selling price 270 were sold at R400 000 and below, 538 between R400 000 and R800 000, 434 between R800 000 and R1, 500 000, 113 between R1, 500 000 and R3, 000 000 and finally 11 above R3, 000 000. This split reflects a reasonable property price spread, suggesting the availability of Rustenburg properties suited to virtually any budget.

Growth and activity trends seem to suggest that well priced Rustenburg properties for sale are available at around R100 000 below municipal valuations, based on averages from recent reports. Full and sectional-title average Rustenburg property prices are indicated at about R902 000 and R647 000; whilst in terms of municipal valuations the figures are just over R1, 000 000 and about R766 000, respectively. In terms of nearest town municipal rankings, these place average Rustenburg freehold property prices at the top, followed by property prices in Brits, and considerably more than nearby towns such as Paardekraal. The freehold prices on a national level are on par with those of Richard’s Bay in KZN, whilst the average sectional scheme prices on a national level are similar to those of Bloemfontein in the Free State as per the municipal rankings.

What are the major attractions in Rustenburg and what makes the town unique?
The city of Rustenburg thrives off of its mining sector and plays host to the world’s two largest platinum mines. In fact, one might say that the city is so besotted by the areas dominance in platinum, that even the local professional football team is named Platinum Stars! Many locals and tourists alike make use of the tour groups that allow the public to gain intimate access to the mines.

Most of the game parks and nature reserves that litter the town’s outskirts have ample stock of some of SA’s most adored creatures, including leopard, lion, elephant and rhino. For those looking for something other than outdoor activities Sun City, South Africa’s most popular resort and casino – also considered by many to be the jewel in the North West Province’s crown – is located just 45 minutes north of Rustenburg.
